How do I prepare for my in home newborn session? As a Cincinnati newborn photographer, I hear this question a lot from mothers who have decided to capture their new baby memories at home.
Having someone come into your home during this time can feel like an overwhelming task to take on while adjusting to life with a newborn. But not to worry! Here are five steps to take to help your session go as smoothly as possible:
Whether our shoot will take place in your living room, bedroom, or baby’s new nursery, it’s important to make sure surfaces are clear! Scan the room for distractors such as mail, tissue boxes, and toddler toys that we don’t want in your photos. This is a great thing to do the night before so you can sit back and relax on the day of our session. If you miss something, no worries! My eyes will catch anything that may have gotten left behind.
Natural lighting plays a key role in creating beautiful images. The bigger the windows, the better. So let’s open up those blinds! I may adjust your curtains to allow more or less light in depending on the direction we’re facing and/or the time of day.
In order to get those dreamy, sleepy newborn photos, we need your little one to, well… sleep! Ensuring they have a full tummy is the first place to start. If they start to fuss in the middle of our session, don’t worry! I factor in plenty of time for us to stop and feed as we go. Remember, this time is for you and baby to bond, and I’m here to facilitate that in any way possible.
Our session will likely start with solo shots of baby, naturally swaddled and snuggled on my bean bag. Having them just in their diaper when I arrive eliminates the need to wake them up by undressing. If there’s a special outfit you’d like to include, we’ll incorporate that after their swaddled photos.
This day is for you! We’re here to capture beautiful memories of this special time in your life. Your only job is to love on your sweet new family and leave the rest up to me!

Thank you for these helpful tips that will ensure a great photo session!
Love these tips! You were SO understanding when my baby wanted to hungrily cluster feed every 15 min during our session (even though he had just eaten right before you came lol typical). I felt so bad, but you never made me feel rushed or stressed over it. You’re the best ❤️
These are wonderful and very helpful tips! Knowing what to expect and how to prepare for a newborn session is a great way to put new parents minds at ease.
This is awesome! Great tips 🙂
